Under the general supervision of the Clinical Coordinator/Director of Surgical Services, is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the Surgical Suite.


Education: High School graduate or GED

Experience: Effectively organize work and set priorities; Positive attitude; Applicable knowledge related to safe work conditions; Works effectively within the healthcare team


Clinical Competency

  • Applies the principles of standard precautions and personal safety into daily practice
  • Acts as a role model for new employees to demonstrate and explain the proper method for cleaning the Surgical Suite including the Sterile Processing Department per infection control standards
  • Anticipates and prioritizes cleaning needs to facilitate turnaround times of the O.R. schedule.
  • Maintains a neat and organized work environment
  • Completes and documents as scheduled the daily, alternate day, weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly and annual duties as listed in “Operating Room Housekeeping Duties”
  • Identifies where equipment and supplies are stored in the Surgical Suite
  • Assists in setting up the Operating Rooms with the appropriate supplies and equipment prior to the procedure and returning equipment to proper storage areas after the procedure
  • Assists in maintaining a professional and quiet atmosphere in the O.R.
  • Seeks assistance from colleagues and supervisory personnel when he/she has questions and/or concerns in regards to procedures or equipment
  • Under the direction of a registered nurse, assists the Surgical Team by assisting with positioning and transferring the patient
  • May have to lift more than 25 pounds
  • Completes urgent and necessary errands to support the surgical team
  • Maintains par levels for laundry and scrub suits

  • Protects the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy


  • Assures quality of care by adhering to infection control standards
  • Follows hospital and nursing division's mission, philosophies and standards of care
  • Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects


  • Maintains technical and infection control knowledge related to housekeeping by attending in-services, educational workshops; and/or reviewing professional publications
  • Demonstrates the accountability as a health care professional by recognizing each practitioner is individually responsible for his/her actions
