Under the immediate supervision of the Pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy Services, is responsible for the functions of a certified pharmacy technician.  Additionally, the analyst shall manage system implementation projects and other projects, support, maintain and enhance pharmacy application systems, and act a pharmacy liaison for matters relating to systems integration.  The major component of the job involves assuring the integrity of the 340b Drug Purchasing Program in conjunction with the Clinical Services Business Manager.


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business or related field, Master’s degree preferred.  Certified Pharmacy Technician, through training or on-the-job training

Experience: Two years of data analysis and/or business management support in healthcare or related field. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and clinical documentation systems. Experience with healthcare terminology, health care regulatory compliance, data abstraction and auditing. Aptitude for identifying strategic implications based on data analysis and reports. Must be able to work effectively with all levels of management and staff, possessing tact, discretion and diplomacy. Ability to determine best course of action for project work, projection coordination and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Knowledge of the dynamics and trends in health care. Ability to work on multiple projects at one time in complex environment.

Licensure: CPhT, Registered Pharmacy Technician


Clinical Competency

  • Ability to prepare both sterile and non-sterile compounds
  • Understanding of billing and insurance processing for outpatient prescriptions
  • Fill automated dispensing machine with required medications
  • Understands computer systems and the integration between systems
  • Able to purchase medications through appropriate channels
  • Implement automated systems including but not limited to automated dispensing devices, bar-coding technology, pharmacy information system, unit dose packaging systems, wholesaler information system and the inter-relationship between all systems
  • Create and analyze reports as requested
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Coordinates unit testing and integrated system testing
  • Monitors project progress, report progress, maintains an issue list, and implements corrective action plans
  • Coordinates all aspects of a systems go-live
  • Develops and presents project plans and timelines
  • Coordinates systems with vendors and IS Department
  • Coordinates and develops workflow and policies and procedures

340B Oversight and Compliance

  • Training and education of staff regarding compliance with the 340b program
  • Assists in the 340b compliance meetings with members of the Senior Leadership team
  • Assure the integrity of the pharmacy 340B drug purchasing program in collaboration with the Clinical service business Manager.
  • Conducts annual review and update of 340B processes with the Clinical Service Business Manager.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy and finance and external retail pharmacy partners regarding future 340B business expansion opportunities
  • Provide ongoing 340B program education and technical support internally (to pharmacy and finance personnel) and externally (to 340B partnership pharmacies).

Patient Advocacy

  • Is attentive to processing of refill prescription requests and prior authorizations
  • Utilize appropriate resources for non-English speaking patients, hearing and sight impaired individuals, and/or healthcare illiteracy
  • Clearly communicates to the patient and family at an appropriate level of comprehension
  • Offers to provide a pharmacist resource for patient counseling and medication education
  • Provides timely processing of prescriptions

Quality & Professionalism

  • Fills Automated Dispensing Units in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assures medications about to expire are removed and segregated from other inventory
  • Purchases products through wholesaler to assure contract compliance and 340b maximization
  • Maintains an appropriate level of inventory
  • Assists the pharmacist to assure quality care
  • Auditing of purchasing practices within the Hospital
  • Maintains certifications and continuing education requirements
  • Participates in Hospital committees
  • Understand and contributes to the overall improvement in quality pharmaceutical care
  • Practices professional interactions with patients, co-workers and vendors
  • Assure contract pharmacies are purchasing properly through audits
  • Review and maintain authorized physician, patient, and drug list
  • Review purchases and recommend cost saving contract alternative drugs
  • Work with split billing vendor to update systems and database as necessary
  • Coordinates external audit process
  • Provide oversight of ordering, billing, expenses, and revenue.
  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy with Administrative duties as needed
  • Conduct and Lead LEAN initiatives throughout the institution
  • Conduct and Lead Quality Initiatives and Data Analysis
