  • Overview

    Under the general supervision of the Clinical Coordinator/Director or Surgical Services, is responsible for the highest level of patient care administered within the Department of Surgical Services through the education of staff and the care and processing of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. This role includes but is not limited to pre and post-operative case management, and perioperative patient care coordination with the Department Clinical Coordinator.



    Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

    Experience: Effectively organize work and set priorities; Positive attitude; Applicable knowledge related to safe work conditions; Works effectively within the healthcare team.

    Licensure: Certification by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) or similar accredited agency, within 18 months of hire if no experience.  If experienced, certification will be expected within one year of hire.


    Clinical Competency

    • Acts as a clinical resource and mentor for perioperative staff using evidence based knowledge and prevailing standards
    • Assists staff members in evaluating practice and in creating strategies for further improvement
    • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and others
    • Provides and coordinates educational resources for SPD and clinical staff working with the Clinical Coordinator and Hospital Educator to develop and implement perioperative team education
    • Works with the Director of Surgical Services to fiscally and operationally manage the department
    • Participates in interviews for staff selection
    • Gives input to the Director regarding staff member performance prior to annual evaluation
    • Decontaminates instruments and equipment used in patient care.
    • Receives items from patient care units and physician offices, utilizing universal precautions
    • Disassembles equipment as recommended by manufacturer
    • Chooses appropriate method of decontamination, according to guidelines
    • Prepares equipment, instruments, and supplies for sterilization
    • Assembles kits according to index cards
    • Able to identify instrumentation and equipment and proper location of storage
    • Label and place chemical indicators according to procedure
    • Package and label instruments for sterilization, per unit procedures
    • Continuously assess the integrity of sterile packaging
    • Anticipates equipment/instrument needs for surgical procedures
    • Operates sterilizers, adhering to strict quality control standards manufacturer instructions
    • Performs and interprets biological indicator results on all loads; completes load control cards promptly. Responds appropriately when indicators are out of range
    • Performs tests on pre-vacuum sterilizers daily and interprets results. Responds appropriately when indicators are out of range.
    • Utilizes appropriate recording charts for all sterilization cycles
    • Solutions are mixed, labeled, monitored and exchanged according to manufacturer recommendations and Huggins Hospital policy
    • Performs preventive maintenance on hospital-wide patient care equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
    • Promptly notifies appropriate personnel for repair or replacement
    • Distributes equipment, instruments, and supplies processed by Sterile Processing, following identified schedule
    • May have to lift more than 25 pounds

    Patient Advocacy

    • Protects the patient's rights, dignity, and privacy
    • Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies


    • Works with the Director of Surgical Services and other staff members to enhance quality improvement by identifying areas for improvement, collecting, analyzing, implementing and reporting on the QI projects
    • Follows hospital and nursing division's mission, philosophies and standards of care


    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and/or participating in professional societies
    • Demonstrates the accountability as a health care professional by recognizing each practitioner is individually responsible for his/her actions
