  • Overview

    Under the general supervision of the Vice President Nursing & Clinical Services, is responsible for the implementation of the objective of the Emergency Department to insure that patient standards are being met.  The Director also plans, directs and evaluates patient care and personnel performance.

    Qualifications

    Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor’s desired, enrollment in, or completion of MSN preferred. Certification as CEN preferred .

    Experience: At least two years progressive nursing management experience.

    Licensure: Current Registered Nurse licensure in state of New Hampshire.

    Responsibilities

    Clinical Competency

    • Oversees Emergency Department and EMS staff and program.
    • Maintains equipment inventory in working order.
    • Knowledgeable and current with CMS Survey Regulations. Ensures staff and unit will be survey ready.
    • Maintains up to date policies and procedures reflecting current nursing practices. Policies and procedures will be reviewed at least annually.
    • Participates in the process of hiring, disciplining and terminating staff in conjunction with nursing management and human resource personnel.
    • Demonstrates awareness of organization's culture and its implications in relation to the ED and staff. Participates in and promotes Customer Service initiatives.
    • Maintains effective communication with staff through rounds, staff meetings, e-mail and memos to decrease conflict and promote team work.

    Monitors staff assignments, patient care and patient response to treatment via observation and chart re Monitors QI program, staff educational needs, scheduling, and coordinates meetings.
    Patient Advocacy

    • Utilizes appropriate resources for non-English speaking patients, healthcare illiterate patients, hearing and sight impaired patients and caregivers.
    • Takes proactive steps to recognize and report suspected abuse/neglect, including, child abuse, elder abuse, sexual abuse, and spousal abuse. Reporting identified cases to supervisor and appropriate authorities.
    • Clearly communicates to the patient and family at an appropriate level of comprehension

    Quality

    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and/or participating in professional societies.
    • Ensures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards. Making recommendations for adjustments in patient care as necessary.
    • Adheres to Infection Prevention standards, consistent in hand hygiene practice before and after each patient interaction. Adheres to infection prevention precautions. Holds team members to IP and hand hygiene standards and room/patient IP precaution measures to prevent infection or the spread of infection.
    • Follows Huggins Hospital's mission, vision and philosophy of care.
    • Participates in quality review, performance improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives within the department

    Professionalism

    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and/or participating in professional societies.
    • Participate in the CMS Survey Readiness activities, CMS surveys and any remedial measures.
    • Participate in organizational meetings as deemed necessary
