  • Overview

    Under the general supervision of the Manager of Cardiac Rehab and Cardiopulmonary Services and within departmental policies and procedures, is responsible for supporting the day to day operations of the Cardiopulmonary Department.


    Education: Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred or equivalent

    Experience: Demonstrated clinical competence with a minimum of three years in practice

    Licensure: CPR required, CRT required, RRT preferred


    Respiratory Therapy

    • Achieves and maintains clinical competency and state licensure in Respiratory Therapy.
    • Administers all developmentally appropriate respiratory care and diagnostic procedures to support patients of all ages in all hospital care areas as assigned by the Department Manager or Medical Director.
    • Administers drugs in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Administers CPR as necessary for all age groups.
    • Collects and interprets arterial blood gases.
    • Administers oxygen, aerosol, humidity, IPPB, CPAP, BiPAP therapies.
    • Airway management, Mechanical and Non-invasive ventilation and monitoring

    Cardiac and Pulmonary testing

    • Performs electrocardiogram testing and report processing.
    • Performs event monitors/recorders scheduling, setup, processing and reporting as trained and deemed competent.
    • Performs Holter monitor scheduling, setup, technical analysis, processing and reporting as trained and deemed competent.
    • Performs cardiac stress testing scheduling, testing, processing and reporting as trained and deemed competent.
    • Performs pulmonary function testing (PFT) scheduling, testing and reporting as trained and deemed competent.
    • Performs other special procedures as trained and deemed competent as outlined in the Cardiopulmonary Policy and Procedure Manual.

    Support Functions

    • Participates in inventory control to maintain appropriate supply levels to ensure continuity of service.
    • Performs all required CP equipment preventive maintenance to ensure the equipment is fully functional and ready for use at all times.
    • Participates in training new employees on department policies, procedures and equipment.


    • Participates in all Cardiopulmonary department QA programs/projects.
    • Ensures all CP activities are appropriately documented in the electronic medical record.
    • Understands and practices safe respiratory care techniques
    • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments.
    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge and/or certification by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and/or participating in professional societies.
